Jane, Sue and Robert travelled to Ben Rhydding on May 13th for our first league match of the season. It was not blessed with the best weather. We suffered a couple of heavy showers and hail! However, as always, the company was congenial and welcoming, and we enjoyed some challenging games resulting in a win for Ripon by 7 games to 5. Jane, Sue and Michael hosted Bishop Monkton on 27th July. The match got off to a promising start with Ripon being ahead 4 games to 2 when play paused for lunch. Perhaps this was an ill-advised interval, as the afternoon saw Bishop Monkton pull ahead with a final score of 7 games to our 5. Interestingly, we scored 50 hoops to their 51, so it was closer fought than the overall result might suggest. After the battle was o’er, we were blessed with a gorgeous selection of cakes made by Jane, which was a delicious reward for our efforts!
Robert drove Sue and Michael to Sheffield Croquet Club on Thursday 6th August. Sheffield won by 8 games to 4 and 66 hoops to 46.
Ripon Spa v Ben Rhydding 17 August 2026

For a change, after this long hot summer, the sky was overcast with occasional
drizzle in the morning. The morning’s play saw Ripon ahead by 5 games to 1 when
we broke for lunch. Singles play in the afternoon saw Ripon win 4 games to Ben
Rhydding’s 2, resulting in an overall win for Ripon by 9 games to 3. Finally, we were
all rewarded with some excellent scones provided by Jane, which rounded off a
pleasant day with congenial company.
