It has been an interesting season, playing varied teams and lawns. It has also been enjoyable though it showed up some of our weaknesses. On the plus side, the cakes were wonderful. We may need a training plan!

Ben Rhydding B came on Monday 6th June and played extremely well on lawns that would have been unfamiliar to them, whereas we appeared to struggle slightly. The result, shown above, was a loss for Ripon Spa, but this leaves room for us to improve.

Sheffield Croquet Club visited on Thursday 16th June, when the heat was tempered by a gentle breeze. They also played extremely well and had a well deserved win.

Sheffield CC team between matches

We visited Brodsworth Hall on Tuesday 12th July. There was good cloud cover all day, so no need for blockers, except on the lawns. We enjoyed playing in such splendid surroundings. We also enjoyed the warm hospitality, as well as the baking, of our hosts. While the result was a bit better for us, there remains room for improvement.

Yes, it is tea time

Sheffield U3A2 came on Thursday 14th July and played extremely well on lawns that would have been unfamiliar to some of them. The day was mostly overcast and not too hot – near perfect for the match, which was enjoyed by us all. The result, shown above, was a loss for Ripon Spa, but this still leaves room (but not so much time) for us to improve.

We went to Sheffield U3A and played against team 1 on Monday 25th July. The weather was changeable, but mostly dry and comfortable. We all enjoyed our matches, although the hosts prevailed. I recognise that time is running out for us to secure our first victory!

The teams at lunch

We went to Bishop Monkton on the day following our friendly match there. The lawns had been cut that evening and were quite lovely on Wednesday 10th August. The weather was quite hot and almost uncomfortable. We all enjoyed our matches and managed a draw. A point at last!

The visitors

Lepton came on Monday 22nd August and played extremely well on lawns that were new to them all. The day was mostly dry, despite the rain laden forecast, though rain did fall during the 2 final rounds, the match was enjoyed by all. The result, shown above, was yet another loss for Ripon Spa. Will we manage a win this season? We must aim to improve. Our last match is on 19th September against Ben Rhydding B.

Preparation on Sunday 21st August
A jump for blue ?
A hoop for brown ?

Ben Rhydding R cancelled the match due to be played on 21st September. One of their players was in hospital and no substitute could found. This represents our only win in the league and it is a sad way to achieve it.
