Maggie Cowman Cup 2022

The first Maggie Cowman Cup Festival of Croquet took place on 5th and 6th September at Studley Royal Cricket Club the home of Ripon Spa Croquet Club.  Over the two days we raised £450 for the Freeman Heart and Lung Transplant Association.  This was the organization that supported Maggie and she supported brilliantly.

On the Monday sixteen players played progressive doubles.  Seven rounds of up to hoop seven croquet were followed by quarter finals, semis and a final between old hands Ted and Rosemary against up and coming young stars Roger and Michael, the old hands prevailing.

Tuesday was a day slightly interrupted by rain in which 3 untimed rounds in discrete blocks of four, was followed by semi-finals and the final played out between Jane and Ted.  Jane was the first winner of the Maggie Cowman Cup!  Sue had the honour of raising the Claret Jug and Michael the Silver Goblet.  Many participants were awarded FHLTA key rings as a memento of two days of friendly croquet and good conversations.

Thanks to Steve for running the cricket club bar and the cricket club for letting us use their BBQ,  Ted, Sue, Andrea and Kerry for providing food for the BBQ, and afternoon teas, to Liz and Arlene for helping with scoring and for the “team” for setting up the lawns and being welcoming hosts to visitors and players from far and near including Cyprus and Wales which made this an International Tournament.

We boldly look forward to our second Maggie Cowman Cup next year.
