The third Maggie Cowman Cup Festival of Croquet took place on Monday and Tuesday 9th and 10th September 2024 at Studley Royal Cricket Club. Once again this happy croquet event brought together many people who had known Maggie and played with her in both worlds of cricket and croquet. Thank you to FHLTA for providing a banner and pens and badges and literature, these were most welcome and gave extra prizes for all who had taken part.
Maggie had been given an extra lease of life from her transplant and used it in a most positive and constructive way, encouraging us to do the same by example. She has had an effect on us all and we try to follow where she has led and are so pleased that this event has now raised £1,335 over the last three years for the Freeman Sports Association.
In croquet terms we had two innovations – for the progressive doubles we played short get-on-with-it games of just 22 minutes 30 seconds and the day went really well with Ted and Daphne emerging the winners and receiving the special commemorative medals. At the end of the croquet, players and visitors enjoyed a welcome BBQ.
For the singles on the Tuesday we played a system called all play all and Jo-Ann triumphed winning 6 out of her 7 games and was awarded the silver trophy. We played through a forceful west wind so much so that we had to retrieve the gazebo from over the hedge and then eventually take it down for fear of damage but still the players played on in the resolute spirit of which Maggie would have approved!
Hot tea and excellent cake were appreciated by all who took part!
