Advantage doubles
4 pairs entered the competition on Sunday 25th May. Alex and Kerry, Sue and Robert, Roger and Eric and Liz and Michael. The games were not timed and the advantage system only made a difference in Alex and Kerry’s matches. Conditions were windy and chilly. The afternoon ran smoothly under Sue’s careful management. While the matches were not close, the score sheet told a different story. Roger and Eric had 3 net hoops as did Liz and Michael. Liz and Michael retained the trophies by virtue of having beaten Roger and Eric. A special commendation goes to Alex and Kerry for battling against more experienced players.

Advantage singles
7 members entered this competition on Sunday 8th June. It was run under the trial system of ‘target’ scoring. Play started at 09:40 and finished at 16:45, but there was a break for lunch. The weather forecast promised rain in the early afternoon, but this came to nought. The day was overcast and chilly and the players soldiered on, under the expert and patient management of Sue. Roger came back to his former form to win the day.

Club doubles
Our club doubles competition was held on July the 31st. Six pairs competed in near perfect conditions. For once the weather wasn’t too wet, wasn’t too hot and wasn’t too windy!
There was some excellent croquet played and in the last round two games went to the golden hoop!
At the end of the day 3 pairs all had 4 wins each, Ted and Roger, Andrea and Marcia and Sue and Jane and so the decision had to go to hoop differences which meant that Sue and Jane emerged victorious.
The tournament was managed by Andrea and Kerry, tasked with tea duty, provided some excellent cakes for everyone to enjoy.

Progressive doubles on 19th August
Report by manager Ted Flexman
Fantastic shots
Robert playing his first ball from corner 4 on court 2 struck, with perfect weight and line, and his ball finished nearly in the jaws of hoop 1. With play like this it is no wonder that he retained his Progressive Doubles title. He finished with 12 points out of 16. Equally impressive Arlene finished with 11 points out of 16 topping her group, so, both the 2024 champions retained their titles. Can they do it for three years running? We will have to wait until next year to find out.
12 players competed this year in two groups of six and at a leisurely pace of thirty minutes per game we managed 8 rounds. We took the opportunity to break in the new court four which, as cricket outfield, was noticeably slower than our usual courts but with hoops set at eleven sixteenths made for exciting play.
It was a grand day out and enjoyed by all, even those stuck on courts 3 and 4 for several rounds …
We have had an excellent suggestion – next year how about playing in fancy dress? What does everybody think?
There will be a picture of the winners and Ted on our facebook page.
Club championship on 1st September
There was a threat of (much needed) rain, but it only amounted to a short shower in the early afternoon delaying play slightly. Rounds 1, 2 and 3 were played in discrete blocks. After lunch, round 4 saw the top 2 players playing the other top 2 players. Similarly, the lower players played the other lower players. The resulting semi finals were between Ted and Jane and Roger and Sue. Sue and Ted then played for 3rd and 4th place. Ted won this at hoop 13. Roger, who was playing at his best this season proved too strong for Jane. Roger won at hoop 11.
